Coffeechug AI Update 10/4/24: Trends, Tools, and Insights for the Weekend
Introduction
Welcome to this edition of the Chaos Navigators Newsletter, where we explore the latest in AI innovation and anything else I think is worth sharing. In this newsletter we are all over the board hence the chaos, from military robots to creative AI tools. I've gathered the most exciting updates for you to dive into, along with some fun prompts to try out this weekend. Let’s get into it!
And like many others, I am loving all the updates to Google NotebookLM and in particular the option to take any of your documents or materials and convert to a podcast between two AI voices. I decided to give it a go with this newsletter and you can listen to the AI podcast version of this text in the newsletter.
1. Army Testing Robot Dogs Armed with AI Rifles in the Middle East
In a significant step toward AI-powered warfare, the U.S. Army is now testing armed robot dogs equipped with artificial intelligence-enabled rifles in the Middle East. These robots, designed to perform dangerous tasks without risking human lives, are being evaluated for real-world military operations. With AI driving the decision-making, these machines have the potential to respond faster and more precisely than human soldiers.
Why it matters: The introduction of AI-powered robots in combat zones signals a shift in military strategy. This technology could reduce human casualties, but it also raises ethical questions about autonomous weapons and their decision-making capabilities in life-or-death situations. If widely deployed, this could redefine warfare, with AI controlling more critical aspects of battlefield tactics.
2. Microsoft Copilot's New AI Updates: A Glimpse into the Future
Interacting with computers is usually a one-way street. But at a preview event Tuesday, Microsoft’s Mustafa Suleyman said AI will make devices more malleable—like clay you can shape. With that in mind, Microsoft just unveiled a set of brand-new Copilot features. Here’s everything we saw at Tuesday’s sneak peek:
Copilot Voice: Microsoft’s answer to OpenAI’s Advanced Voice mode, focusing on emotional intelligence. Its four voices can match your mood, crack self-deprecating jokes, and even reassure you if you’re having a tough day. I currently enjoy Canyon
Copilot Vision: This AI can “see” everything on your screen and provide real-time insights. In one demo, a user asked about Rotten Tomatoes movie reviews, and Copilot not only summarized them but also recommended streamable titles.
Recall: A super-charged browsing history that helps you track down elusive webpages and documents (e.g., “Find the chart with the purple arrow from last week”). It now comes with biometric safety features and encryption.
Think Deeper: Powered by a fine-tuned version of o1, this feature assists in making complex decisions, such as planning vacations.
Copilot Daily: An AI-generated podcast delivering personalized news stories.
AI Search: Helps you intuitively find settings, files, images, and more across your devices.
Why it matters: These new features make Copilot more than just a tool—it’s becoming a personal assistant that adapts to your emotions, preferences, and daily tasks, transforming how we interact with technology.

3. Google Unveils AI-Powered Chromebook Plus with New Productivity Features
Google just rolled out Chromebook Plus, an AI-powered upgrade to the traditional Chromebook, designed to boost productivity and accessibility for all users. As we still navigate whether AI should be used or not we need to pick up the pace of shifting mindset because it will just be here on all devices and this debate back and forth is soon to be irrelevant.
Here’s a breakdown of the key new features:
Quick Insert Key: This new dedicated key allows users to quickly insert frequently used items—like images, emojis, and links—into their documents with a single tap, streamlining workflow and reducing time spent hunting for resources.
AI-Driven Enhancements: Chromebook Plus includes several AI-powered tools to improve user experience. This includes automated content generation, where the device can summarize texts or images on demand, helping users manage information more efficiently.
Magic Editor in Google Photos: An AI-enhanced photo editor that allows users to make professional edits, such as background changes, lighting adjustments, and object removal, all with minimal effort.
Video Call Boost: Enhancements to Google Meet, including automatic noise cancellation and real-time lighting adjustments, ensure video calls look and sound professional, even in less-than-ideal environments.
Why it matters: Chromebook Plus makes AI-powered computing accessible to a wider audience, with features that simplify daily tasks and boost productivity. These upgrades push Chromebooks beyond basic functionality, turning them into smart, adaptive tools for both work and personal use.
4. Pika Labs’ New Text-to-Video Tool Turns Objects into Cake (and More)
If you haven’t tried text-to-video tools yet, now’s the time to dive in. Pika Labs has rolled out an update to their already impressive tool, Pika 1.5, with some quirky new presets that you didn’t know you needed — like turning any object into cake. That’s right, Cake-ify is just one of several new presets that can transform everyday objects into something unexpected.
Other new presets include:
Melt It
Explode It
Inflate It
Crush It
Each does exactly what its name suggests, and while they might not be the most practical features, they’re packed with fun and creativity. Curious? Head over to Pika Labs to try it out and see what you can create. And don't forget to share your work—I'd love to see it!
Here is my example of a stack of books turning into a squishy becuase I need to get back to reading again for pleasure and anyone with kids knows the amount of squishy toys all around.
5. OpenAI’s Canvas: A New Tool for Organizing Complex Projects
OpenAI has started rolling out a new feature called Canvas, designed to help users manage and organize more complex projects seamlessly. It’s being viewed as the startup's answer to Anthropic's popular Artifacts tool, offering a workspace for in-depth tweaks and adjustments.
Canvas allows users to work on detailed projects, like receiving feedback on specific lines of code or refining sentences in real time—without having to create entirely new prompts. This feature could be a game-changer for anyone handling complex workflows, from coding to writing, as it provides a more dynamic and interactive approach to using AI.
Why it matters: With AI platforms racing to innovate and keep up with each other, Canvas marks a significant step forward for OpenAI, bringing more flexibility and precision to project management. It’s definitely worth exploring if you’re looking to refine your workflows and need a more adaptable tool for in-depth tasks.
6. Fun Prompts to Try This Weekend
If you're looking for fresh ways to test out AI’s capabilities, here are some prompt ideas to try this weekend. And of course, feel free to share your own favorite prompts—I'd love to see what creative uses you’ve found recently!
Prompt Idea 1: How to Create Expense Reports Using ChatGPT
Head over to ChatGPT and log in with your account.
Select GPT-4 as your model.
Upload images of all your receipts and ask ChatGPT to analyze and turn them into an expense report.
Use the following prompt:
“Analyze all uploaded receipts and create an expense report based on these receipts. Record the data in a table, including date, merchant name, and amount, categorize these expenses by type, and then calculate the total expense.”You can then export this report as a PDF or CSV file for download.
Prompt Idea 2: Educator Support as Coach
Use this prompt to turn ChatGPT into a learning coach:
“Act as a learning coach to incorporate active learning strategies into studying [subject or topic]. Provide specific examples of activities such as problem-solving, discussion, teaching others, and applying concepts in practical scenarios. Craft questions that encourage critical thinking and application of knowledge to get a deeper understanding of [topic/subject].”
Give them a try, and let us know how they work for you!
