Automating the Everyday: How I Used ChatGPT Agents to Meal Prep, Plan, and Complete The Shopping
What happens when you hand over your family’s weekly grocery planning to AI?
This week, I decided to find out.
With three kids (ages 20, 18, and 14), a personal goal to eat healthier as I begin lifting again, and a budget under $300, I turned to ChatGPT’s new agent feature to help me do what usually takes me hours: plan, price compare, and shop for a week of meals.
And… it delivered. Literally.
The Setup: Feeding a Family with Purpose
I started with this detailed prompt (see image) to guide the agent through my needs, dinner themes (fish fry, taco night, etc.), and health goals. The intention wasn’t just convenience — I wanted to:
Stick to a fitness-focused meal plan
Feed my kids better without complaints
Stay under budget
Compare store prices across Hy-Vee and Fareway
Avoid stress and decision fatigue
I have no doubt this prompt will only improve and become even more effective the more I try this out and fine tune the process in coming weeks, but this is what I started with:
Here’s What the Agent Did:
Created a full meal plan with recipes
Suggested healthy snacks and lunches
Built shopping carts in two grocery stores (Hy-Vee + Fareway)
Accounted for weekly ads and deals
Allowed me to stay in control by verifying logins and adjusting items
Check out the full visual breakdown of meals and recipes in this Gamma board where I copy and pasted the results into this AI tool to make it look a bit better, but I did not adjust any text:

I recorded the whole process as ChatGPT worked from planning to live grocery cart building and added my thoughts, questions, and insights along the way.
In this video, you’ll see:
How to use the prompt yourself
What ChatGPT Agent mode actually does
My real-time reactions
Questions to consider for your own life and work routines
Why This Matters (And What to Think About)
This isn’t just about food. This is about reclaiming your mental energy.
Ask yourself:
What other repetitive, decision-heavy tasks could I offload to AI?
How can this technology create more space for joy, focus, and family time?
What routines are eating up time that could be better spent elsewhere?
This project wasn’t perfect and I’ll share some of my lessons learned and frustrations in future posts but it opened up a powerful new workflow for me.
Your Turn
Try this yourself. Here’s what you need:
ChatGPT Plus account
This prompt or one of your own
10 minutes to review and customize it
Then let the agent take over and let me know how it goes.
I’d Love to Hear:
What would you use this feature for?
Would you trust AI to do your shopping?
What would make this even more useful?
Drop your thoughts in the comments or DM me!
Thanks for following along on this journey as I continue testing what’s possible when we blend AI, routine, and real life.
